Trump’s World Liberty gets conditional OCC nod – What changes for USD1?

The latest development in the world of cryptocurrency involves U.S. President Donald Trump’s family-affiliated company, World Liberty Financial (WLF), as it makes strides in the American banking system.

Recently, World Liberty Trust Company received conditional approval for a national trust bank charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), marking a significant step towards integration into the banking sector.

Key Requirements for Final Approval

Despite the initial approval, final authorization is pending as WLF must fulfill certain criteria. These include hiring an internal audit manager, maintaining a minimum capital of $20 million, and informing the OCC of any substantial changes in their business plan.

The letter emphasized,

This preliminary conditional approval is contingent upon thorough evaluation and compliance with all regulatory requirements set forth by the OCC.

The approval process also entails meeting additional pre-opening obligations before final authorization can be granted.

Implications for WLF and Its Stablecoin

World Liberty’s pursuit of a national trust bank charter, rather than a traditional banking license, opens up avenues for managing client assets, providing custody services, and facilitating settlements without conventional banking activities.

The potential approval of the charter holds significance for USD1, World Liberty’s stablecoin, as it would consolidate issuance, custody, and reserve management under a federally regulated entity, reducing reliance on external partners.

Moreover, the regulatory framework offered by a national charter could enhance USD1’s appeal to institutional clients seeking secure custody and settlement services.

Growing Criticism

The close association of World Liberty with Trump has drawn criticism, particularly from Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Following the OCC approval, Warren expressed,

President Trump’s involvement in a self-operated bank sets a concerning precedent of self-dealing within the financial system, which must be addressed by Congress.

Additionally, the transfer of WLFI tokens and the decision of Trump Media & Technology Group to halt cryptocurrency expansion have fueled further skepticism.

In Conclusion

  • World Liberty Trust Company has secured conditional approval for a national trust bank charter, pending final compliance.
  • Criticism from Senator Elizabeth Warren highlights concerns over potential conflicts of interest in Trump’s cryptocurrency ventures.
