The recently released National Security Strategy (NSS) by Trump 2.0, as authored by Andrew Korybko via Substack, outlines a new approach to US interests. The strategy focuses on the primacy of nations over transnational organizations, optimized burden-sharing, and reindustrialization through securing critical supply chains. The Western Hemisphere is the top priority, with the “Trump Corrolary” to the Monroe Doctrine aiming to prevent non-hemispheric competitors from controlling vital assets.
In Asia, the US plans to rebalance trade ties with China, compete in the Global South, and deter China over Taiwan and the South China Sea. Europe is urged to regain its self-confidence and focus on healthy nations in Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe. Economic and political tools will be used to manage European relations with Russia and correct Europe’s trajectory.
West Asia and Africa are lower priorities, with a focus on investment and growth in these regions. The US aims to maintain peace and combat Islamist terrorist activity while optimizing burden-sharing. The NSS emphasizes the need to prevent global domination by any one power and maintain a balance of power through pragmatic policies.
Trump 2.0’s NSS is ambitious and aims to restore the US’ central role in the global system. If control of the Eastern Hemisphere is lost to China, the US may retreat to the Western Hemisphere and focus on building “Fortress America”. Implementing this strategy will be challenging, but even partial success could reshape the global systemic transition in the US’ favor.
