Why standard Bitcoin transfer figures are off by up to six times, according to the BIS

Blockchain technology allows for the recording of every transaction, providing researchers with valuable data to measure economic activity. However, different approaches to analyzing this transparent ledger can result in varying estimates of value transferred.

A recent Bank for International Settlements (BIS) working paper highlighted the discrepancy in Bitcoin transfer-value estimates, showing a sixfold difference across different measurement methods. This variation emphasizes the importance of how analysts interpret blockchain records to determine economic transfers.

The measurement of Bitcoin activity hinges on how movements are categorized and interpreted in terms of value transferred. Transaction aggregation, smart-contract programmability, and cross-blockchain comparisons all contribute to the divergence in measurement approaches.

Charts can provide consistent calculations while still reflecting underlying assumptions that may impact the total value. The key takeaway is that researchers play a crucial role in determining which records represent comparable economic events based on the ledger data.

Contracts and stablecoins pose challenges for comparisons

The BIS paper extends its analysis beyond Bitcoin to explore how smart contracts and stablecoin behavior complicate economic comparisons. The classification of active contracts and tokens reveals the difficulty in identifying meaningful economic activity amidst extensive token issuance and contract proliferation.

Trading activity, particularly involving stablecoins, is found to be highly concentrated and centered around specific blockchains. The economic meaning of stablecoin figures differs across networks, reflecting varying usage patterns based on the blockchain platform.

The authors advocate for a nuanced approach to interpreting on-chain indicators, emphasizing the need for granular, data-driven estimates that explicitly connect ledger events to economic activity. They suggest that on-chain figures should be viewed as approximations rather than direct measures of economic activity, with methodology transparency being essential for accurate comparisons.

While on-chain data can provide insights into network behavior, the counting rules and assumptions behind metrics like transfer value, active contracts, and stablecoin holdings are crucial for meaningful comparisons.

The conclusions drawn in the publication are attributed to the authors and do not necessarily reflect official BIS views.
