Will Wall Street Crash Again On October 19, And Will Bitcoin Price Follow?

“Black Monday” is currently a hot topic on social media as Wall Street prepares to open on October 19, 2026, marking the 39th anniversary of the most catastrophic single-day crash in stock market history. The weekend saw large sell-offs in tokenized AI stocks, coupled with high oil prices and increasing bond yields, all contributing to the buzz.

Recalling Black Monday of 1987

On October 19, 1987, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted by 22.6% in a single day, still holding the record for the largest one-day percentage drop in history, surpassing even the crashes of 1929, the aftermath of September 11, and the 2008 financial crisis.

  • The S&P 500 lost 20.5% and the Nasdaq 11.4% on that fateful day.
  • An estimated $500 billion in US stock value was wiped out.
  • Hong Kong shut down its stock exchange for four days, reopening with a 33% drop in the Hang Seng index.
  • The Federal Reserve intervened to provide liquidity to sustain the financial system.

The Causes Behind the Market Crash

Multiple factors contributed to the crash, including escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf, concerns about rising interest rates, anxiety over the trade deficit, computer-driven program trading, and a prolonged bull market that had not experienced a significant correction. Reports from that time repeatedly emphasized one word: panic. Once fear took hold and orderly trading ceased, a vicious cycle of selling ensued.

Steps Taken by Wall Street Post-Black Monday

In response to the 1987 crash, US exchanges implemented circuit breakers in 1988. Present-day regulations dictate that trading halts based on the extent of the S&P 500’s decline:

  • 7% drop before 3:25 pm ET: a 15-minute pause in all US stock trading
  • 13% drop before 3:25 pm ET: an additional 15-minute halt
  • 20% drop at any time: trading ceases for the day

Furthermore, according to CME Group, S&P 500 futures are capped at a 7% movement overnight. These circuit breakers were first triggered on October 27, 1997, when the Dow plunged by 554 points, leading to an early closure of trading. Subsequent refinements were made in 2013 after the breakers failed during the 2010 Flash Crash. While the 20% threshold has never been reached, the 7% pause occurred multiple times in March 2020.

Fears of a Repeat Performance on October 19

  • Reports indicate Brent crude closed near $110 on Friday, partly due to Ukrainian strikes near St. Petersburg.
  • The VIX volatility index reportedly hit a four-month peak.
  • Increasing Treasury yields and inflation rates.
  • Concerns over bank stocks and unverified rumors regarding an AI-centric fund.
  • Crypto entrepreneur Ran Neuner claimed $1.9 trillion in losses for US tech stocks.

Fund manager Adrian Day noted similarities between current conditions and those of 1987, such as higher interest rates, worries about the dollar and deficit, and an allegedly overvalued AI sector. However, he mentioned that yields have not yet escalated enough to prompt a massive shift from stocks to long-term Treasuries, citing strong bids at the recent 10-year auction.

Weekend Sell-off in Tokenized Stocks

With US markets closed on Saturday, perpetual futures tied to AI and chip stocks plummeted by up to 5% within seconds. Data from CoinGlass revealed approximately $51.6 million in leveraged chip-stock positions liquidated in a brief 10-minute span, affecting contracts related to Micron, SanDisk, and SOXL.

Impact on Bitcoin

Bitcoin and Ethereum mirrored the decline in AI stock contracts before rebounding. Funding rates for BTC and ETH remained neutral, indicating traders did not heavily favor either direction.

Unlike traditional markets, crypto lacks circuit breakers and operates 24/7, meaning any reaction precedes the US market opening. A sharp stock sell-off on Monday could potentially drive Bitcoin down, fueled by forced liquidations, rising yields, and a broader risk aversion trend. Limited liquidity often amplifies such movements.

Key points to monitor on Monday:

  • Nasdaq performance at the US opening
  • Oil prices and Treasury yields dynamics
  • Bitcoin’s ability to sustain recent lows

While circuit breakers make a 22% single-day plunge more challenging to replicate, they do not prevent losses beyond each halt level. Moreover, tokenized stocks and crypto now trade continuously without such protective measures.
