WSJ Catches Up, Discovers AI’s Off-Balance Sheet Liabilities Are $3 Trillion And Growing $1.2 Trillion Per Quarter

In an article published over two months ago, it was revealed that the majority of AI buildout commitments were cleverly hidden in off-balance sheet SPVs and other legal accounting techniques. This revelation, which went unnoticed by Wall Street analysts, highlighted the massive amount of spending commitments in the AI sector, exceeding $1 trillion annually. The article emphasized the risks associated with these off-balance sheet commitments, referring to them as “The $1.8 Trillion Off-Balance Sheet Time Bomb At The Heart Of The AI Supercycle.”

Following the latest earnings reports from hyperscalers in July, it was discovered that these spending commitments had surged, with some companies committing over $1.5 trillion. The rapid increase in off-balance sheet obligations raised concerns about the financial stability of these tech giants.

A recent article by the Wall Street Journal titled “Why Big Tech’s AI Spending Is $3 Trillion Higher Than It Seems” corroborated the findings from the original report, confirming that tech companies have committed around $3 trillion in off-balance sheet obligations related to AI.

The article pointed out that traditional capital expenditures (capex) reported by tech companies do not fully capture the extent of their future spending commitments. These off-balance sheet obligations are growing at a faster rate than conventional capex, posing a significant financial risk.

The WSJ analysis revealed that nine top tech companies have approximately $3 trillion in off-balance sheet commitments, mainly linked to AI initiatives. This amount is three times higher than their outstanding leases and long-term borrowings.

The off-balance sheet obligations include uncommenced leases and purchase commitments, totaling $1.2 trillion across the companies analyzed. These financial commitments are off the balance sheet until they are realized, creating a potential financial burden for the companies.

The surge in off-balance sheet liabilities raises concerns about the financial health of tech companies, especially as some of them are already posting negative free cash flow. The article warns that these obligations could lead to further borrowing and financial strain if not managed effectively.

The potential risks associated with these off-balance sheet commitments include a collapse in profits, increased indebtedness, and the need for additional funding. The volatile market conditions, particularly with the rise of Chinese open-weight models, could further exacerbate these risks.

Overall, the article underscores the importance of transparency and disclosure in financial reporting, especially concerning off-balance sheet obligations. The rapid growth in these liabilities highlights the need for careful monitoring and management to ensure the long-term sustainability of tech companies in the AI sector.
