Jeremy Lott via The Epoch Times wrote about the enduring costs of the terror attacks 25 years ago on America’s commercial aviation sector. The attacks on September 11, 2001, had a significant impact on the industry, leading to higher costs, fewer choices, and more delays for domestic fliers. The financial fallout was severe, with airlines posting losses and facing bankruptcies. The creation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and increased security measures further added to the costs for passengers and taxpayers. While there are criticisms of the TSA, some believe that it is necessary for national security and that improvements can be made to better serve the public. The repercussions of longer screening times and missed flights were evident during the 76-day partial government shutdown earlier this year. Acting TSA administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill testified in late March about the challenges faced by the workforce due to the shutdown, with call-out rates spiking and screening capacity decreasing significantly.

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) stood out during this time as a participant in the Screening Partnership Program, where private contractors handled screenings smoothly while TSA operations were disrupted elsewhere. The airport reassured travelers of normal operations and minimal wait times, showcasing a stark difference in efficiency.

Concerns were raised about TSA’s self-regulation and lack of accountability in ensuring security. Despite past failures in detecting dangerous items, transparency on effectiveness has dwindled, leading to doubts about the agency’s efficacy.

As the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks approaches, reflections on the impact of security measures on air travel highlight the need for a more flexible and relevant approach. While TSA PreCheck has been a positive development, there is a call for a shift away from rigid rules to a more adaptive security model.

Looking ahead, there is potential for growth in private jet travel and the development of an affordable air taxi system. Despite initial setbacks post-9/11, advancements in aircraft technology and the demand for more accessible air travel suggest a promising future for the industry. following sentence:
