Evercore’s top ideas for a Harris/Blue Sweep

Investing.com – Evercore ISI has revisited the US equity market in light of the upcoming November presidential election following President Joe Biden’s transition of power to Vice President Kamala Harris within the Democratic Party.

The recent thwarted assassination attempt on Republican candidate Donald Trump, amidst a closely contested Presidential election, indicates that political uncertainty is expected to persist.

While Harris’ emergence as the Democratic frontrunner has narrowed the polling gap and made the Presidential race highly competitive, Evercore ISI is maintaining its sectoral predictions for both Harris and Trump victories, citing minimal policy changes.

Historically, a Unified government has shown superior market performance compared to a Divided government. However, given the current deep political divisions in the country, 2025 may see stocks fare better in a Divided government scenario.

In the event of a Harris/Blue Sweep, potential winners are projected to be renewables/EVs and ACA/Medicaid-focused health insurers, as Harris is likely to continue clean energy initiatives and healthcare enrollment efforts.

Conversely, sectors such as Financials, gas/coal utilities, prescription drugs, and Medicare Advantage insurers may face challenges under a Harris Administration’s regulatory stance.

Despite Harris’ policy announcements on grocery sector price regulations and tax increases to fund her economic proposals, the actual impact remains uncertain, especially considering the legislative hurdles in a Democratic Sweep scenario.

Evercore ISI highlights that Harris’ proposals would require significant legislative support, which is currently deemed unlikely due to the Senate’s favorable composition for Republicans in 2024.

Overall, Harris is seen as a continuation of the status quo, and the potential regulatory impact of her administration is still uncertain, given increased scrutiny from federal courts.
