Goldman Thinks Nintendo’s Switch 2 Will Blow Away Estimates, Sees No Supply Constraints

Nintendo’s initial sales forecast for the much-awaited Switch 2 console fell short of expectations, with a projection of 15 million units for the fiscal year ending in March, below Bloomberg’s analyst consensus of 16.8 million. This lower forecast may be due to increasing trade uncertainty and challenging economic conditions affecting consumer sentiment. Despite this, the console is still set for release in June.

Goldman gaming analysts Minami Munakata and Haruki Kubota noted that Nintendo tends to provide conservative estimates before the launch of a new console. The company’s guidance for operating profits for the fiscal year includes assumptions of 15 million units for Switch 2 hardware and 45 million units for software, which are below market expectations. However, historical trends suggest that Nintendo’s guidance tends to be revised upwards after the initial launch.

The analysts also highlighted that while the Switch 2 may have a higher price point compared to its predecessor, it offers platform continuity and backward compatibility with existing game software. This, along with bundled software offerings, could support adoption and penetration of the new console. They believe that the 15 million unit assumption could be surpassed, especially considering the strong demand indicated by pre-order registrations.

Pelham Smithers, managing director at Pelham Smithers Associates, mentioned that some investors may view Nintendo’s cautious approach as a strategic move to manage supply and demand dynamics for the Switch 2. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Nathan Naidu echoed similar sentiments, citing positive pre-order trends as a sign of potential success for the console.

Reports of the Switch 2 selling out at major retailers further indicate the strong interest in the upcoming console. Analysts like those at Goldman Sachs have expressed optimism about the Switch 2’s potential to attract new users and drive record-high console sales.

As the launch date approaches, it is possible that Nintendo’s conservative estimates could be surpassed, leading to a successful debut for the Switch 2 in the gaming market.
