Dies-aster: California Diesel Nears $10 A Gallon As Global Fuel Crisis Deepens

Recent data from AAA reveals that diesel prices in the US have surged to a record high of $6.05 per gallon, indicating a significant tightening in global refined-fuel markets.

The escalation reflects a convergence of factors: Russian refinery disruptions, halts in diesel exports due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, ongoing disturbances at Hormuz, increased threats to Red Sea shipping, and heightened Chinese purchases. These developments pose risks to both fuel availability and the crucial shipping routes necessary for supply distribution, with conditions deteriorating as the Northern Hemisphere winter approaches.

GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, reported that five gas stations in California have reached the maximum diesel price of $9.999 per gallon.

The surge in retail diesel prices is accompanied by a fresh spike in crude oil values, with Brent nearly hitting $110 per barrel before receding to $104 following an IEA report cautioning about potential demand reduction for industrial fuels.

S&P Global Energy cautioned on Thursday that it does not anticipate a return to prewar levels of Middle East crude production by the end of 2027.

Citi analysts cautioned on Friday that rising commodity and diesel costs will exert pressure on numerous companies within their scope well into the first half of next year:

In 2025, commodity costs showed mild inflationary trends except for specific inputs like coffee, gas, and tallow, which experienced significant increases. However, in 2026, commodity inflation has accelerated once more, with notable strain on direct and indirect energy-related products due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including oil, resins, and diesel/freight expenses. Moreover, prices for commodities affected by tariffs and global trade dynamics have also risen in 2026, such as in aluminum and steel. Many of the companies we cover have highlighted these challenges posed by input costs, which are squeezing margins this year and are likely to continue as obstacles at least until the first half of 2027.

The critical issue at hand is whether the shock in fuel prices can drive inflation upwards while simultaneously impeding economic growth, potentially leading to a stagflationary dilemma.
