The EU and Mexico on Friday agreed a long-delayed trade deal as they seek to reduce reliance on the US ahead of Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

The two sides will modernise their existing agreement just weeks after Trump threatened them with tariffs.

The deal, confirmed on Friday, follows an EU agreement with South American trade bloc Mercosur in December.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said: “This landmark deal proves that open, rules-based trade can deliver for our prosperity and economic security, as well as climate action and sustainable development.”
