Authored by Michael Snyder via The Economic Collapse blog,

Thanksgiving is a time when we should focus on giving thanks rather than viewing it as an ordeal to be endured. It is a day to eat a feast while surrounded by loved ones, not a burden to be avoided. According to George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving declaration, we are meant to give thanks to a higher power on this day. However, in our self-centered society, this has been forgotten.

Thanksgiving has evolved from a single day of giving thanks to a whole season of celebration. While some may view spending time with family and friends as a problem, I believe that the more time we can spend with loved ones, the better.

Human relationships can be complicated, but that doesn’t mean we should isolate ourselves. Learning to love imperfect people is a crucial part of life. Many articles on “how to survive Thanksgiving” focus on dealing with family members, suggesting that we avoid important topics like politics. However, avoiding meaningful conversations is not the solution – learning to peacefully interact with those we disagree with is essential.

Political discussions are often discouraged at Thanksgiving gatherings, but having differing opinions is natural. Society should value the exchange of ideas, even when they differ. Unfortunately, many people are cutting ties with family members over political differences, leading to widespread estrangement.

Thanksgiving is an opportunity to change this trend by humbling ourselves and giving thanks for our blessings. Remembering the true meaning of Thanksgiving, as outlined in President Washington’s 1789 proclamation, can help us appreciate the importance of gratitude and unity.
