A company based in New York has made significant progress in developing a specialized transportation solution for High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) fuel.

NANO Nuclear Energy has achieved a key milestone in the conceptual design of an advanced HALEU transport package to support next-generation nuclear reactors.

World-class nuclear transportation expertise

According to Jay Yu, founder and chairman of NANO Nuclear, “HALEU fuel logistics will be one of the foundational pillars of the advanced nuclear industry.”

Yu stated, “Our collaboration with Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH (GNS) has combined world-class nuclear transportation expertise with NANO Nuclear’s proprietary fuel basket technology. The achievement of this early design milestone is a crucial step towards establishing the infrastructure necessary to facilitate the deployment of advanced reactors in the United States and globally.”

The project utilizes NANO Nuclear’s exclusively licensed nuclear fuel transportation basket design, developed in partnership with GNS, a leading specialist in the treatment, packaging, and transportation of radioactive materials. GNS is renowned for its expertise in transport and storage cask design, licensing, manufacturing, as well as advanced technologies for nuclear waste processing and facility decommissioning.

Nuclear fuel transportation package

The HALEU transportation package being developed by NANO Nuclear is designed to accommodate various advanced nuclear fuel types, including uranium oxide fuels, TRISO particle fuels, uranium-zirconium hydride fuels, uranium mononitride fuels, and molten salt reactor fuels.

This broad compatibility ensures that the transportation system can meet the diverse fuel requirements of emerging microreactor, small modular reactor (SMR), and advanced reactor technologies, as per NANO Nuclear.

NANO Nuclear, in collaboration with GNS, has completed several significant early-stage engineering milestones for the project. This includes the development of conceptual designs for two optimized fuel payload baskets capable of transporting HALEU materials in multiple fuel forms and a preliminary design for the transport package overpack.

These engineering tasks were carried out under a formal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Quality Assurance program to ensure compliance with stringent safety and documentation standards for nuclear transportation systems.

With the completion of these foundational design milestones, NANO Nuclear plans to advance the fuel transport package through subsequent development phases, including further engineering validation and regulatory involvement. The company aims to engage with the NRC for certification of the transport package, a crucial step in enabling secure commercial transportation of HALEU fuels across the United States.

The company also highlighted that establishing reliable transportation infrastructure for HALEU fuel is essential for the advancement of next-generation nuclear energy technologies. As microreactors and advanced reactors progress towards regulatory approval and commercialization, the safe transportation of advanced fuels will be vital for establishing a fully operational nuclear fuel supply chain.
