Kremlin Mocks European ‘Illusions’ For Wanting Own Nuclear Umbrella

France and Britain are currently discussing the possibility of expanding their nuclear arsenals to safeguard Europe under a defense ‘umbrella’, amid concerns over the United States’ commitment to leading NATO. According to Politico, several European countries are supporting talks on developing a homegrown nuclear deterrent in response to a lack of trust in the US leadership. Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin has criticized these efforts, stating that the British ‘nuclear umbrella’ will not enhance security for NATO members.

Kelin’s comments were published in an interview with Russian newspaper Izvestia, where he emphasized that Moscow is closely monitoring countries with anti-Russian policies. He also noted that Russia will factor in the potential expansion of nuclear defenses in its military planning and strategic stability discussions. Kelin criticized Britain’s aggressive stance in the Ukraine conflict, suggesting that London’s ambitions for European security leadership are misguided.

The ambassador highlighted Moscow’s concerns about Britain’s purchase of F-35 fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear warheads from the US. Additionally, the Baltic states’ interest in discussing a common European nuclear deterrent has raised alarms in Moscow. Despite this, NATO has reaffirmed its commitment to the US nuclear umbrella for allied nations.

The article also mentions the expiration of the New START nuclear treaty between the US and Russia, signaling a new phase of uncertainty in nuclear relations. Russia has offered to limit its arsenal if the US reciprocates, but the situation remains precarious.
