A recent study in Israel has revealed a higher-than-expected number of miscarriages and fetal losses associated with COVID-19 vaccinations. The research found that for every 100 pregnant women who received a COVID-19 vaccine during weeks eight to 13 of pregnancy, there were 13 fetal losses, four more than expected.

The majority of people in Israel, including pregnant women, received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

The study, published as a preprint on the medRxiv server, analyzed electronic health records from Maccabi Healthcare Services, one of the major healthcare providers in Israel. The researchers examined 226,395 pregnancies between March 1, 2016, and Feb. 28, 2022, focusing on fetal loss after COVID-19 vaccination during specific stages of pregnancy.

The findings indicated a higher number of fetal losses than expected among women who received a COVID-19 vaccine during weeks eight to 13 of pregnancy. However, the researchers cautioned that further investigation is needed to establish a definitive link between the vaccines and fetal losses.

Dr. Tracy Hoeg from the Food and Drug Administration and Retsef Levi from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are among the researchers involved in the study.

The study also highlighted lower-than-expected fetal losses among pregnant women who received an influenza vaccine during a specific period, suggesting a potential healthy vaccine bias in the data.

Despite the encouraging results from some observational studies, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated its recommendations and no longer advises COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy.

The paper, which was rejected by two journals, aims to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy. The researchers are working to publish their findings in a reputable journal to further contribute to the ongoing discussion on this topic.
