Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) to Utilize Blockchain for Faster Settlement of Japanese Government Bond Transactions
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) has announced its plans to leverage blockchain technology to facilitate quicker settlement of Japanese government bond (JGB) transactions, a move that mirrors similar efforts by banks worldwide.
As part of this initiative, MUFG is in the process of developing a proof-of-concept for onchain JGB transactions using the Canton network. This will help streamline the settlement process, which traditionally takes 1-3 days.
The Tokyo-based bank aims to enhance the efficiency of repo transactions by enabling real-time 24/7 onchain settlement. Repo transactions involve the buying and selling of securities for short-term borrowing and lending purposes.
MUFG highlighted that financial institutions in Europe and the U.S. have been exploring similar projects to enhance operational efficiency. For instance, JPMorgan’s Kinexys network has been facilitating blockchain-based intraday U.S. Treasury-bond repos since 2020.
With JGBs being widely utilized as collateral for repo transactions by market participants globally, MUFG emphasized the increasing momentum towards transitioning them onto the blockchain.
Furthermore, this project is part of MUFG’s broader efforts to integrate blockchain technology into traditional financial processes. Recently, the bank collaborated with Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMBC) and Mizuho Financial Group to explore the possibility of launching a jointly issued stablecoin by March 2027.
