A Corruption Case in Southern California Unravels Dramatically

A corruption case in Southern California took a dramatic turn when federal agents unearthed tens of thousands of dollars hidden underground at the residence of a longtime local politician, as reported by the NY Post.

Ricardo Pacheco, a former Baldwin Park councilman, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for accepting bribes during his time in office. Investigators discovered $62,900 buried in his backyard, part of a total of over $83,000 confiscated from him.

According to federal prosecutors, Pacheco leveraged his position to grant favorable treatment to private interests in the city. Much of the corruption involved companies seeking approval to operate marijuana establishments in Baldwin Park.

Pacheco also accepted money from a police officer who was cooperating undercover with the FBI. Authorities stated that he received $37,900 from the officer and subsequently endorsed a police association agreement worth more than $4 million over three years.

The NY Post reports that another former elected official, ex-Compton Councilman Isaac Galvan, was ensnared in the same probe. Galvan confessed to giving Pacheco $70,000 in exchange for help with marijuana licenses and also confessed to not disclosing over $500,000 in earnings.

Both individuals were handed 18-month prison terms. Pacheco was fined $10,000 and instructed to forfeit nearly $220,000, while Galvan was mandated to repay more than $323,000 in restitution.

Following his guilty plea and resignation from office, Pacheco started collaborating with federal agents and assisted in building cases against numerous others connected to local governance and the cannabis industry.
