South Korea is facing a crucial decision regarding its cryptocurrency gains tax, with discussions scheduled among exchanges and policymakers to assess the feasibility of the proposed January 2027 implementation date.

Summary: The country has postponed the implementation of the crypto tax three times already. A new proposal suggests a potential delay until 2029, although no official decision has been made yet.

Finance officials are set to meet with representatives from major domestic exchanges on October 20. The industry argues that the necessary systems for handling various transaction types and calculating cost bases are still incomplete. Rushing the launch could lead to inconsistent tax treatment or drive activity to offshore platforms.

South Korea’s planned tax rate is commonly understood to be 22% after local taxes, rather than a simple 20% charge. The current focus is on ensuring that the reporting infrastructure is ready to process millions of transactions across different platforms.

A lawmaker has proposed linking the implementation date to cross-border data sharing through the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, potentially delaying the start until 2029. However, legislative action would be required to enact this change, and a meeting with exchanges alone cannot alter the law.

As of now, the scheduled implementation date remains January 2027 unless lawmakers decide otherwise. For exchanges, a later timeline could provide more time to develop reporting systems, but it would also prolong policy uncertainty. South Korea has faced similar situations before, highlighting that any proposed delays should not be considered final.
