Thai Police Track Down 3 Children Suspected Of Lighting Homeless Man On Fire

Authorities in Thailand have discovered three children, aged nine to 15, who are suspected of setting a homeless man on fire under a bridge in Bangkok and capturing the attack on video.

The victim, a 51-year-old man known as Karn, resides beneath the Ban Ma Bridge in the Prawet district, where he makes a living by collecting recyclable materials. He recounted that the incident occurred while he was asleep, as reported by SCMP.

“I was sleeping under the bridge when I felt cold liquid being poured on me before flames erupted on my body,” Karn shared with the press.

Witnesses in the vicinity stated that the attack seemed unprovoked, corroborating Karn’s assertion that he had no ties to the suspects.

SCMP writes that the police have confirmed the identification of the three minors, but their identities are being safeguarded under child protection laws. Investigators mentioned that the children could potentially face charges such as attempted murder and destruction of public property, as nearby infrastructure suffered damage during the fire.

Footage of the incident quickly circulated online, eliciting strong criticism. Many individuals advocated for harsher penalties, with some suggesting that the suspects be treated as adults or that their parents be held legally accountable.

This incident has reignited focus on violent acts involving young individuals in Thailand. In August of last year, three teenagers in Lampang were apprehended for setting a disabled dog on fire in an abandoned structure, though authorities did not disclose the outcome.

During that same month, a separate assault in Bangkok made international headlines when an unemployed man set a Malaysian tourist couple on fire near a prominent shopping center.

The government subsequently pledged to cover their medical expenses and provide compensation.

As the investigation progresses, this recent incident has sparked broader discussions regarding youth conduct, responsibility, and public safety in Thailand.
