The construction industry has seen a surge in the development of megaprojects globally, with a particular focus on the Arab Gulf Region.

According to estimates by construction software company 1Build, the world is on track to witness the first construction megaproject surpassing $1 trillion in cost before the end of the decade. Currently, there are several projects underway with costs exceeding $100 billion, a significant increase from the previous benchmark of $10 billion for megaprojects.

Out of the nine ongoing megaprojects identified by various sources, including International Construction Magazine and Construction Review, four are taking place in Arab Gulf States.

One of the most ambitious projects in the region is Neom City, a futuristic development in Northwestern Saudi Arabia.

The Line, a key component of Neom City, has garnered attention for its unique concept of a completely enclosed, linear city. Recently, the project was scaled back to a fraction of its original size but still aims to accommodate around 300,000 residents by 2030. Other notable megaprojects in the Gulf include King Abdullah Economic City in Saudi Arabia and Silk City in Kuwait, which will feature the world’s tallest building.

Among the mega projects worldwide, the EU’s Trans-European Transport Network stands out with an estimated cost of $600 billion. This infrastructure upgrade includes the development of railway lines, roads, shipping routes, and related structures across EU member countries to enhance long-distance transport.

Despite the progress, some projects in the region have faced setbacks, such as the $250 billion rail project connecting GCC member countries. While initially delayed, planning has resumed to complete the project. Another megaproject, Dubailand, experienced partial cancellation after initially being budgeted at $64 billion for an entertainment and tourism complex.
