Reports over the weekend indicated that significant overnight Russian attacks on Ukraine targeted major arms production facilities and the energy infrastructure supporting them, particularly in the Lviv region near the Polish border.
Other regions such as Sumy, Kharkov, Ivano-Frankovsk, Vinnitsa, Poltava, Chernigov, and Odessa were also hit by waves of attacks involving around 50 missiles and 500 drones. In response, Ukrainian forces retaliated on Monday with long-range drones successfully hitting a major Russian ammunition plant, an oil terminal, and a key weapons depot behind the front line, as reported by the Associated Press.
The Sverdlov ammunition plant in Nizhny Novgorod was identified as one of the targets of the Ukrainian strikes. Explosions and a fire were witnessed at the plant, which supplies various aviation and ground ordinance.
Another target was an oil terminal in Crimea, which also resulted in a fire, and an ammo depot belonging to Russia’s 18th Combined Arms Army.
Russia’s Defense Ministry vaguely acknowledged the attacks, mentioning that over 250 Ukrainian drones were shot down across 14 Russian regions. This incident marked one of the largest drone barrages over Russian territory in recent years.
One individual was injured in the attack by falling drone debris and was taken to a hospital in Nizhny Novgorod, according to Russian sources.
Prior to this, Ukraine had attacked a major oil facility on October 4th, causing explosions and a fire at the Kirishi refinery in Leningrad.
Both sides have intensified their assaults on each other’s energy and weapons production facilities in recent months.
Ukraine has been emphasizing its domestic weapons production capabilities, aided significantly by Western allies, prompting Russia to target and destroy these manufacturing plants.
President Zelensky highlighted the use of foreign-made components in Russian weapon systems during the attacks on Ukraine, indicating a trend that he shared on social media.
