Ukraine Uses High-Altitude Balloons To Extend Suicide Drone Strike Range

Ukrainian forces have implemented a new strategy inspired by China’s hypersonic glide-weapon testing in the Eastern European theater, utilizing one-way attack drones against Russia.

Instead of launching the Hornet strike drone from a ground-based catapult, Ukrainian operators opted to tether it to a high-altitude balloon, significantly extending its range.

According to Defense Blog, the test involved a Hornet drone manufactured by Perennial Autonomy being dropped from a balloon at an altitude of 8 kilometers after the aerostat carried the drone 42 kilometers from its launch point.

The new tactic is projected to double the Hornet’s range to 300 kilometers (approximately 186 miles), as reported by Defense Blog.

Military experts have been impressed by Ukraine’s swift weapons innovation, especially their utilization of “low-tech” solutions like drones and interceptors. These advancements have been so successful that the U.S. military and allied Gulf nations are now acquiring some of these weapons.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has transformed into a testing ground for weapons and AI, hastening the development of battlefield technology and expediting the introduction of weapons that were originally planned for the 2030s.
