US Military Officers In ‘Surprise Visit’ To Belarus To Observe Joint Russian War Games

Recently, there has been a slow but steady improvement in US-Belarus relations. President Aleksandr Lukashenko agreed to release 52 political prisoners to Lithuania, a NATO member, which led to Washington granting sanctions relief to Belavia, the national airline of Belarus. President Trump even sent Lukashenko a warm letter and a gift of cufflinks.

Interestingly, this positive development comes at a time when the Moscow-aligned ‘Union State’ is conducting joint Russian war games, known as the “Zapad-2025” drills, amidst heightened tensions with NATO. A surprising turn of events occurred on Monday when the Pentagon sent representatives to observe the war games in Belarus.

The presence of US military officers at the war games is a significant development, especially considering Belarus’ close ties with Moscow, particularly in supporting Russian military operations in Ukraine. The Pentagon’s decision to observe the war games from Belarusian soil is unprecedented.

According to a report by Reuters, the Belarusian Defense Minister welcomed the US officials and allowed them to observe the drills closely.

This move is likely to provoke strong reactions from the Zelensky government and NATO allies, who may view it as Washington’s collaboration with the enemy amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

Despite the symbolic nature of the Pentagon’s presence, it sends a clear message that the Trump administration is committed to improving relations with both Moscow and Minsk. While US sanctions on Belarus remain in place, the White House seems determined to enhance bilateral ties with Russia and Belarus.
