What You Should Know for a Smooth Transition

Moving to a new home can be a stressful experience for both you and your pets. Whether you’re relocating to a small apartment in Santa Monica or a spacious house in Buffalo, it’s important to consider your furry friends’ well-being during the transition.

To ensure a smooth move for your pets, here are some key considerations and steps to follow:

Plan Ahead for Your Pet’s Move

Before moving day, schedule a vet visit, update your pet’s ID and microchip information, restock on essentials, practice with carriers, and familiarize yourself with pet rules at your new home.

By preparing in advance, you can prevent last-minute stress and ensure a smoother transition for your pets.

Minimize Stress Before Moving Day

To minimize stress for your pets, start packing early, stick to their normal routine, use familiar scents, and create a pet-safe room in your current home.

If your pet is anxious, consult your vet for advice on anti-anxiety options.

Create a Safe Zone on Moving Day

On moving day, keep your pets in a quiet, pet-safe room with essentials to prevent them from getting stressed or running away.

Consider having a friend pet-sit or booking daycare for your pets during the move.

Car Travel Tips for Dogs and Cats

When traveling by car, secure your pets, offer water at stops, keep the car cool, and never leave them unattended in the vehicle.

For cats, use a carrier with a comfortable towel inside and cover it with a blanket for a calmer journey.

Flying with Pets

If flying with pets, confirm airline rules, book a direct flight if possible, label carriers with contact info, and avoid sedation unless advised by your vet.

For older or medically fragile pets, consult your vet to determine if flying is safe for them.

Help Pets Adjust After Arrival

After arriving at your new home, set up your pet’s essentials first, introduce rooms gradually, and keep doors and windows secured.

Allow dogs to explore on-leash and cats to adjust to one room at a time to help them settle in.

Don’t Forget the Neighborhood Factor

Consider the neighborhood amenities and rules that will impact your pet’s daily life, such as vet locations, walking routes, pet-friendly areas, leash laws, and noise levels.

Ensuring a pet-friendly environment in your new neighborhood is essential for your pet’s well-being.
