Who Really Drives Global Terrorism? Internal US Govt Data Offers A Surprising Answer

It is a common narrative that Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, a claim that is often used to justify military actions. However, a closer look at the data published by the State Department tells a different story. The statistics show that Sunni extremist groups, not Iran, are responsible for the majority of terrorist attacks worldwide. These groups, such as the Taliban, ISIS, Boko Haram, and al-Qaeda, operate independently from Iran and often target Shia Muslims, including Iran, as their enemies.

Who commits the attacks

The data shows that Sunni groups are the main perpetrators of terrorist acts, with groups like the Taliban, ISIS, and al-Qaeda being responsible for the majority of attacks. Iran-linked groups, such as Hezbollah and Iran-aligned militias, are not as prominent in the data, as their operations are primarily directed at military targets rather than civilians.

While some Iran-linked groups like the Houthis, Hamas, and Hezbollah have been involved in attacks on Israel, their impact is relatively small compared to Sunni extremist groups. Hamas and Hezbollah, despite their reputations, have not been among the top perpetrators of attacks worldwide until recently.

The Israeli numbers

Looking at the data from Israel, it is evident that Palestinian attacks have decreased since the early 2000s. Groups like Hamas, while not peaceful, account for a smaller percentage of attacks compared to other factions. The number of casualties from rocket attacks by Hamas and Hezbollah is also lower than commonly portrayed in the media.

On the other hand, the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces is significantly higher, highlighting the asymmetry in the conflict.

Who actually funds the perpetrators

Contrary to popular belief, the main financial support for terrorist groups comes from Gulf Arab states and, at times, even from the United States. The paper trail reveals that funds have flowed through Syria to groups associated with ISIS, raising questions about the narrative that Iran is the primary sponsor of terrorism.

The bottom line

Based on the data, it is clear that Iran is not the main driver of global terrorism. Sunni extremist groups, not Iran, are responsible for the majority of terrorist attacks worldwide. A more honest approach to combating terrorism would involve addressing the funding sources in the Gulf states rather than focusing solely on Iran.

Anticipated objections — and the answers

Addressing potential objections, the data shows that Iran-linked groups have only recently entered the top ten perpetrators list and their activities are primarily targeted at military, not civilian, targets. The exclusion of certain data points does not change the overall trends observed in the data, which point to Sunni extremist groups as the main perpetrators of terrorism.

Ultimately, the designation of Iran as the foremost sponsor of terrorism is a political tool rather than an accurate reflection of the data. A more nuanced approach is needed to address the complex issue of terrorism.
