AfD Preps Talks With Moscow To Reopen Cheap Gas Flows To Germany

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party wasted no time after their historic election victory in Saxony-Anhalt, where they garnered 43.8% of the vote. This left Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) shaken. The party has now set its sights on establishing ties that challenge the status quo in both Berlin and Brussels.

According to a report by Reuters, the AfD leadership is preparing for potential talks with President Putin and his economic envoy, Kirill Dmitriev. The focus of these discussions would be on restoring Russian gas supplies to Germany. The meeting is tentatively scheduled for as early as March 2027 and would be led by AfD co-leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla.

The AfD’s intention to re-establish Russian energy sources aligns with the desires of many German voters. Weidel emphasized in a previous interview the importance of cheap Russian energy for Germany’s economic success. She highlighted the negative impact of losing Russian energy, leading to job losses and increased dependence on more expensive energy sources from the United States.

Prior to the Ukraine conflict, Russia supplied over half of Germany’s natural gas and a significant portion of its crude oil imports. However, Russian gas exports to Germany were halted due to the conflict, prompting Berlin to seek alternative suppliers. Many Germans have expressed frustration over rising living costs and the diversion of resources to support Ukraine in the war.

While no official confirmation has been made by Russian officials or the AfD, sources suggest that the meeting would only proceed if a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine is reached first. The summit could potentially involve representatives from the AfD, Russia, and the United States, and may take place in locations like Israel, the United Arab Emirates, or India.

The AfD’s stance on establishing ties with Russia is seen as a response to the economic repercussions of the EU’s sanctions on Russian energy. These sanctions led to higher energy prices for the EU, prompting a shift towards more expensive imports from other sources. Putin has criticized the EU’s gas storage policies and emphasized the importance of pragmatic ties with Russia for Germany’s political interests, security, and economic development.

In conclusion, the AfD’s efforts to re-establish Russian energy supplies reflect a broader sentiment among German voters and highlight the party’s commitment to prioritizing Germany’s best interests. This strategic move could have significant implications for Germany’s energy security and economic stability.
